Understanding the performance of a pellet machine
The production of wood pellets, also called pellets, is a process that requires specific and efficient equipment. Among this equipment, the pellet machine occupies a central place in the production chain. In order to choose your pellet press carefully and optimize its profitability, it is essential to understand the factors that influence the performance of a pellet machine.
The operating principle of a pellet machine
To fully understand the issues related to the performance of a pellet press, it is first necessary to know its mode of operation. A pellet machine transforms wood chips or other fibrous raw materials such as straw or sawdust into homogeneous and compact pellets. The process takes place in several stages:
- Feeding the matrix with raw material
- Compression of matter
- Extrusion through die holes
- Cuts pellets to desired length
- Cooling and drying of pellets
The performance of a pellet machine will depend on various parameters linked to the quality of the raw material, the press settings and the efficiency of the cooling system.

Factors influencing the performance of a pellet machine
The quality of the raw material
The first determining criterion for the performance of a pellet press is the quality of the raw material used. Indeed, it must be sufficiently dry and homogeneous to allow good compression and avoid problems of clogging of the matrix.
It is generally recommended to work with raw materials with a humidity level between 10 and 15%. Beyond that, it will be necessary to carry out drying before implementing the granulation process, which will have a negative impact on the overall performance of the machine.
Pellet press settings
The second key factor for optimizing the performance of a pellet machine is mastering the settings of the pellet press. Among these settings, we can notably cite:
- The rotation speed of the die: too high a speed can lead to premature wear of the die and a reduction in yield
- The pressure exerted on the material: if it is insufficient, the granules will tend to disintegrate and the yield will drop
- The diameter of the die holes: holes that are too small can cause clogging problems and reduce production throughput
- The length of the pellets: cutting too short can lead to loss of material and a reduction in yield.
A good knowledge of the specificities of the raw material used and regular monitoring of the parameters of the pellet press will allow you to optimize the performance of your pellet machine.
Cooling system efficiency
Finally, it is essential to have an efficient cooling system to guarantee optimal performance from your pellet machine. Indeed, during the extrusion of the material through the holes in the matrix, it undergoes significant heating which can degrade the quality of the granules produced.
A suitable cooling system will not only avoid these quality problems, but also preserve the life of the die and improve the overall efficiency of the pellet press.

Some examples of output for pellet machines
The performance of a pellet machine varies depending on the technical characteristics of the equipment and the conditions of use. To give you an idea, here are some examples of output that can be obtained with different types of pellet presses:
- Small capacity pellet press (50-100 kg/h): yield between 80 and 90%
- Medium capacity pellet press (300-500 kg/h): yield between 85 and 95%
- Large capacity pellet press (>1 ton/h): yield greater than 95%
Please note that these values are indicative and may vary depending on the actual conditions of use of the pellet machine.
